Into the Wild Vocabulary

PROCEDURE: 1. Read the sentence in the book where the word is found. Try to get an "emotional read" on the usage. 2. Decide what category the word belongs in. Is it a character trait, and if so, is it positive or negative? Is it good to be an enigma? Is it a word that describes something in the natural world? The word "meander" can describe a natural phenomenon, or a person's way of speaking or moving through the day, and it's a verb, so what are you going to do? Look at how it is used in the book. In this case, it's used to describe a line on a map, "Seldom traveled, it isn't even marked on most road maps of Alaska. On Alex's map, nevertheless, the broken line meandered west from the Parks Highway before petering out..." (5). Choose a category, and be able to explain why you chose it.

Remember, there are FIVE PAGES for vocab: The Natural World/Nature; Positive Character Traits; Negative Character Traits; Miscellaneous Nouns, Verbs and Adjectives (2 pages worth)

This activity is meant to be ACTIVE and COLLABORATIVE. I hesitate to put these up on the blog because I envision you sitting there all alone, with your online dictionary, just doing words words words. IT'S THE CONVERSATION and the TALK ABOUT WORDS that help you figure them out. Use the blog to stay caught up, and to make sure have all of the words written down, but USE THE CLASS TIME I HAVE ALLOCATED TO WORD STUDY for that purpose.

Each word has 8 elements: The word itself; positive or negative connotation; the page number; the definition; synonyms; antonyms; a little sketch, and a category. Use the "Miscellaneous" category with care. Don't just plop everything in there

ANOTHER EXAMPLE: "Anomaly" means something unusual, but it is being used in the book to describe an unusual feature of a specific spot in the Alaskan landscape, so I would put it under NATURAL WORLD. However, if I didn't look at the word in the book, I might just use MISCELLANEOUS NOUN.

A good example of a miscellaneous noun would be "derelict." It is the word used to describe the bus.
